Using the CAE Embody virtual simulator, you can participate in a simulated clinical experience. Your goal is to provide safe nursing care just as you or your learners would in real-life clinical practice.

Problem

The Canadian healthcare system had to be creative and resilient to meet the population’s needs during the global pandemic over the past two years. The system overload shook Quebec and many parts of the world given the labour shortage and the exhaustion of healthcare workers on the front lines. Despite that, at every stage of the pandemic, data and digital technology solutions made the impossible possible and transformed entire industries almost overnight.
So, at the beginning of 2019, I worked with a team of Angular developers, unity developers, product managers, product owners and UX designers to design and build CAE's remote learning platform Embody.
Research & Analysis

User research focuses on understanding user behaviours, needs, and motivations through observation techniques, task analysis, and other feedback methodologies. For me user research is “the process of understanding the impact of design on an audience”.

Without a clear understanding of what your product does, what problems it solves or for whom it solves these problems, ultimately there’s no need for your product. Our goal was to make sure Embody's UX solved typical customer problems in a clear and simple way.


Information Architecture, Wireframing & Prototyping

After proper planning of the user requirements, information architecture, user flows and initial user testing we were able to confidently move into creating wireframes for the app. We took the decision to focus more on the functionality and structure of the app based on both the user requirements and initial testing and opted for mid-fidelity wireframes with very little detail. Ultimately, we could add design elements in later, what was important for our users, was that the product (above all) was clear and simple.

User Testing
 
User testing is a technique used in user-centered interaction design to evaluate a product by testing it on users. This can be seen as an irreplaceable usability practice, since it gives direct input on how real users use the system. So we decided to use this technique in our UI design with these tasks:
 
• Selecting modes
• Inputting values
• Assessment 
• Error handling
• System settings
• performing tasks in order
• etc...
 
Usability testing enabled our design team to improve the usability of Embody to meet acceptable standards of risk. Successful formative testing typically required five to eight end-users, making the number of iterations flexible for our product development team.
 
 
Design
 
Our aim was to create a user interface that was clear and concise. Fatigue and stress were taken into account in the design phase.
 
We also needed to create a familiar, simpler and easier way to display the information and actions to the user. By grouping them into clear logical groups, we created a simple and clear hierarchy users could learn and follow.
 
By using best practices and tried and true interaction patterns found in common devices like mobile phones, tablets and desktop computers it helped create intuitive familiar and easy to understand UI that proved successful when it came to user testing.
